Sales tax rates by province (2026)
| Province or territory | Tax | Total rate |
|---|---|---|
| Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut | 5% GST | 5% |
| British Columbia | 5% GST + 7% PST | 12% |
| Manitoba | 5% GST + 7% RST | 12% |
| Saskatchewan | 5% GST + 6% PST | 11% |
| Quebec | 5% GST + 9.975% QST | 14.975% |
| Ontario | 13% HST | 13% |
| Nova Scotia | 14% HST | 14% |
| New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island | 15% HST | 15% |
Nova Scotia lowered its HST from 15% to 14% on April 1, 2025. In Quebec, the QST is calculated on the price before GST, so the combined rate is exactly 14.975%.
How to remove tax from a total
Divide the tax-included price by 1 plus the combined rate. In Ontario, $113 ÷ 1.13 = $100, so the HST is $13. Taking 13% off $113 would be wrong ($14.69).
FAQ
What is the difference between HST and GST plus PST?
HST provinces combine the federal 5% GST and the provincial portion into one harmonized tax collected by the CRA. In GST-plus-PST provinces, the provincial tax is separate, with its own rules on what is taxable.
Are groceries taxed?
Basic groceries are zero-rated for GST/HST. Prepared food, snacks and many other items are taxable, and PST rules differ by province.
