2026–27 resident tax rates
| Taxable income | Tax rate |
|---|---|
| $0 to $18,200 | Nil |
| $18,201 to $45,000 | 15% |
| $45,001 to $135,000 | 30% |

The 15% rate replaced 16% on 1 July 2026 and is legislated to fall to 14% from 1 July 2027. On $85,000 the tax is 15% of $26,800 ($4,020) plus 30% of $40,000 ($12,000), a total of $16,020.
Medicare levy and the low income tax offset
- The Medicare levy is 2% of taxable income. Singles earning $28,011 or less pay none, and it phases in between $28,011 and $35,014.
- The low income tax offset (LITO) is up to $700 for incomes to $37,500, reducing to zero at $66,667. It can reduce tax to nil but is not refunded.
HELP repayments from 2026–27
Study loans are now repaid only on income above the threshold: 15 cents for each dollar over $69,528, rising to 17 cents above $129,717, and 10% of total repayment income from $186,051. On $85,000, the compulsory repayment is $2,320.80 a year.
Super on top of your salary
The super guarantee is 12% of ordinary time earnings. From 1 July 2026, under Payday Super, employers generally have to pay it at the same time as your wages instead of each quarter.
FAQs
Why is my payslip a little different?
Employers use the ATO’s withholding schedules, which spread tax evenly over the year and round amounts. Any difference is settled when you lodge your tax return.
What if my package includes super?
If your total package includes super, divide it by 1.12 to get your base salary before entering it. A $95,200 package is a base salary of $85,000 plus $10,200 super.
